Previously in WCF literature and on this website we have tended to use Wade Giles transliteration of Chinese Characters. But we are now to standardise on Pinyin instead, since this is the more common standard. Some characters will change very little, whilst others will seem quite different. It will take quite some time to update the whole website, so for a while you will see a mixture of usages. Here are a few of the more commonly used transliterations:
- Ch'an (Wade-Giles) becomes Chan (Pinyin)
- Shih-fu becomes Shifu
- Sheng Yen becomes Sheng Yen
- Lin Chi becomes Linji
- Ts'ao Tung becomes Caodong
- hua tou becomes huatou
- kung-an becomes gongan
- Chi (energy) becomes Qi
