Chinese Zen Meditation Retreats, Silent Retreats
Try out a meditation retreat
Try one of our retreats to develop your mindfulness and take the next steps to investigate the self. We welcome beginners to meditation and retreat as well as experienced practitioners.
We offer concessionary places at 50% of full fee. Select this fee option when making your booking - you do not need to make any application for this and we do not request any financial information from you.
Our events are open equally to both Buddhists and non-Buddhists aged 18 and over. We offer several different retreat formats from half-day or single-day up to 9-10 nights residential. We use various venues in England and Wales, and also sometimes in Scotland.
Personal instruction in meditation during retreat
As well as group instruction we also provide a individual instruction through personal interviews with participants. An 'interview' is a private one-to-one conversation about your meditation practice, and any difficulties you are experiencing with it, with one of our experienced retreat leaders.
Typically each participant will be offered at least one interview opportunity during each shorter retreat of 3-4 days, and two or three interviews during a retreat of 5 days or longer. This enables you to get the most out of your retreat by helping you to meditate more effectively, taking account of your individual experience and circumstances.
Coronavirus/COVID-19
We continue to take some precautions to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 infection at group events with shared accommodation, such as retreats.
Here is a copy of our Covid retreat plan (subject to amendment) which applies to our current programme of events.

Chan Brushwork Retreat
5 night Residential Retreat
Friday 31 August to Wednesday 5 September 2018
Leader: Jake Lyne , Co-Leader: Jos Hadfield
Venue: Roselidden Farm, Helston, Cornwall
In this retreat we will combine Silent Illumination meditation with Japanese brushwork. Each day we will aim for a balance between these mutually supporting practices.
Silent Illumination is a profound meditation practice which leads to a mind of great calmness and insight, using ancient Chinese Zen methods which are just as applicable to the modern West. It is the origin of the Japanese Soto Zen practice of Shikantaza but is approached somewhat differently and full instruction will be given.

A Taste of Chan
4 night Residential Retreat
Monday 18 February to Friday 22 February 2019
Leader: Fiona Nuttall
Venue: Hagg Farm Education Centre, Derbyshire
An opportunity to experience the traditional style of a formal, silent Chan retreat. The format includes sitting meditation, work practice, Chinese style exercises, and walking meditation both indoors and in the countryside around the venue.
The main methods of Chan practice will be introduced to participants, including calming and relaxation methods, the use of Silent Illumination and Koan/Gongan work. These methods will be explored experientially so that the practitioner can 'taste' for themselves the various styles and see which they feel affinity with. The retreat will be rigorous with early starts and intensive periods of meditation each day.
It is an opportunity to experience personal silence in a place of nature and to discover more about ourselves in the space that silence creates. There will be instructional talks each day and opportunities for exploration of the application of mindfulness in everyday activity as we share the experience of the time together.

Chan Brushwork Retreat
5 night Residential Retreat
Sunday 1 September to Friday 6 September 2019
Leader: Jake Lyne , Co-Leader: Jos Hadfield
Venue: Roselidden Farm, Helston, Cornwall
In this retreat we will practice meditation through investigation of a Chan Buddhist koan which will also be explored through Japanese brushwork. As one becomes deeply absorbed in the practice, mental constructions and assumptions drop away facilitating a deepening exploration into the nature of life and reality.
Chan Buddhism is the precursor of Japanese Zen but is approached somewhat differently and full instruction will be given. Brushwork is also based in the Chan/Zen tradition. As Zen Master Hakuin (1688 - 1768) explained, brushwork is a practice with the intention of drawing 'lines of unfettered simplicity, to reveal nothing special, with no particular beauty, only an uncommon ease that transcends our understanding of space and time.'

We intend to raise the tempo of our practice for this period, increasing our capacity to be aware in our daily lives. We will undertake this in our daily lives, whether at home or in the workplace, with the silent support of knowing that we are not practising alone.
A Mindfulness Bell will be rung at noon every day, when all participants may pause and be joined in the silence that the bell marks. Members of our Sangha may use this opportunity in different and creative ways. Open to all.

Hughie Carroll began training in retreat with John Crook in 1996. He made a pilgrimage to Ladakh in 2005, staying for 6 weeks at Lamayuru Monastery and learning Mani stone carving there.
Sophie Muir attended Mahamudra retreats with John from 1993 and joined a small group for pilgrimage in 2019 to Urgyen Dzong, the hermitage of Khamtag Rinpoche.

A Bodhisattva is a person on the path of awakening, conscious of suffering, developing empathy for the joys of others and learning to act freely in order to help others.
The Chan version of the Bodhisattva precepts incorporates the five lay precepts; five other related precepts to do with speech, intentions and views; the three refuges; and the three pure precepts – relating to personal behaviour, good works and helping others.
This online retreat will be limited to 15 retreatants and in it we will bring awareness and self-reflection to the precepts in daily life. We will practice meditation intensively for a day at the beginning and a day at the end of the retreat. During weekdays we will meet for practice in the morning and again in the evening. During daily life between these sessions our focus for awareness will be a specific precept.
There will be teachings on the Bodhisattva path and the precepts and in evening sessions we will explore the Dharma in daily life by sharing our experience of holding a precept in mind during the day.
Participants should plan to attend all sessions: please be sure the arrangements will work for you.
Personal interviews will be scheduled for times between group practice sessions.

Enhance your practice in your own environment
Co-ordinated by Hilary Richards
Join us in a commitment for a period of connected and enhanced practice in your own environment. This is an opportunity to raise the tempo of our practice and increase our capacity to be aware in our daily lives. We will undertake wherever we are, at home or in the workplace, with the silent support of knowing that we are not practising alone.
A Mindfulness Bell will be rung at noon every day, when all participants may pause and be joined in the silence that the bell marks. Members of our Sangha may use this opportunity in different and creative ways. Open to all.
Choosing the Practice
Connected Practice links practitioners at different locations to practise within a virtual sangha. We begin with the noon bell on Saturday 24th April and end with the noon bell on Saturday 1st May. We will practise at specified times during this period, each person in their own environment. Suggested times are 6.30 to 7.30am and 8.00 to 9.00pm but individuals can adapt this to suit their circumstances. At noon each day a “Mindfulness Bell” will be rung.
The key thing when choosing your practice is to choose achievable activities that are appropriate for you as the person you are right now, rather than setting impossibly high standards for 'the Buddhist you think you ought to be.’ To start, first ask yourself what will make a difference.

The Earth as our Witness: Chan Eco-Dharma Retreat
Free Course of 4 evenings (online)
Saturday 5 June to Saturday 12 June 2021
Presenters: Sian Thomas and Stuart McLeod
Venue: Online
Leader: Jake Lyne
There is no need to book time off work during Monday to Friday 9-5, but it is advisable to avoid unusually demanding commitments. Between scheduled sessions we will continue our practice in daily activities. This retreat is suitable for those with prior experience of intensive residential meditation retreats, or of online WCF retreats.
It is said that when Mara challenged the Buddha to produce a witness to verify his awakening, the Buddha touched the earth and the earth verified his enlightenment: Mara was silenced. After his enlightenment the Buddha doubted whether it would be possible to show the way to others. But what else was there for him to do? So, he went on to share his experience and insight and everything followed from that.
We are of the earth and not only is the earth our witness, it is also a mirror facing humanity. Chan Buddhism is this-worldly, we practice not in order to turn away from the world, but to turn towards it. It is very clear that our world is in crisis and that to continue as we are is not sustainable. How can we continue to respond and change, individually and collectively?

It is the origin of the Japanese Soto Zen practice of Shikantaza but is approached somewhat differently and full instruction will be given.
This seven-night silent retreat is an opportunity to learn and deepen this practice through intensive meditation, with instruction and personal guidance by individual interviews with an experienced teacher. The Six Paramitas Online Retreat
Retreat Leaders: Juliet Hackney and Alysun Jones.
A monk once asked the ancient Chinese Zen master Yunmen, 'What is the teaching of a whole lifetime of Buddha?' Yunmen replied, 'An appropriate response.'
This retreat will explore the training for bodhisattvas, the six Paramitas (or perfections): Generosity, Moral Integrity, Joyful Effort, Patience, Concentration and Wisdom. The practice of the Perfections can be seen as being like a raft to take us to the shore of enlightenment. They can also be seen as a way of fulfilling our bodhisattva vow, to help us find an appropriate response to others in our world of suffering.

Investigating Koans
7 night Residential Retreat
Saturday 13 August to Saturday 20 August 2022
Leader: Simon Child
Venue: Shawbottom Farm
The ancient Chinese Zen practices of investigating Huatou and Gongan (Koan) are best practised in a supportive environment such as this intensive silent retreat. As one becomes deeply absorbed in the practice, mental constructions drop away and one is confronted by a realisation that one does not know the nature of existence and one's fundamental assumptions of life are groundless. Staying with and cultivating this 'doubt', it can become all-consuming 'Great doubt' which may 'shatter', giving a direct insight into reality which may be what is known as an Enlightenment experience.

Who am I? Thoroughly confronting this question can take us directly to the centre of our being. Over the course of this five-day retreat you will investigate the question "Who am I?" within a standard retreat framework, using silent meditation in conjunction with a unique method of verbal inquiry. This format allows you to use words to go beyond words and thereby enter the main gate of Chan.
The intensive nature of this process of inquiry drives each practitioner into a self-presentation that is difficult to experience in other ways. To guide and support you, personal interviews with the teachers are offered regularly throughout the retreat. With whole-hearted engagement this retreat may lead to the acceptance of self, the experience of "self at ease," and may even provide an opportunity for direct insight into the ground of being.

Saturday 22 June to Saturday 29 June 2024
Leader: Fiona Nuttall
